At the beginning of the spring, mosquitoes make their annual debut; invading homes and backyards throughout the Raleigh/Durham area. In NC alone there are over 60 species of mosquitoes that are active during much of the year. The most prevalent (which property owners are constantly swatting from their heads, shoulders, knees, and toes) is the infamous Asian Tiger mosquito.

The Asian Tiger Mosquito

It is believed that sometime in the 1980’s, this type of mosquito was accidentally imported from Japan in a shipment of tires (water can sit inside the tire, making it a prime breeding area). Then, the tires were shipped all over the eastern part of the US, but mainly in North Carolina. Luckily (for the rest of the US, anyway) these insects are weak flyers.

Identifying the Asian Tiger Mosquito

These flying insects are rather small, measuring in length at about 1/8 of an inch. Its body is black with tiny white stripes painted on the legs and body. It has a unique single white stripe that stretches from the center of the head to the back.

Controlling mosquito infestations can be a daunting task, but with our efficient control methods we know how to get rid of mosquitoes quickly. First, we locate the areas where eggs are laid including areas of water such as gutters, drains, areas with large amounts of vegetation or the areas where people complain about being bitten. We then utilize the best mosquito control measures to resolve the infestation. Did you know that only the female mosquito bites? It is also been researched that the female mosquito always will land on a vertical surface before taking her blood meal (preparing for egg laying). One way to eliminate this behavior is to treat vertical surfaces around your home with a repellant material to prevent female mosquitoes from feeding.
