When winter arrives in the Raleigh area, pest problems don’t slow down—they change. Mice and rats begin moving indoors, and homeowners often start noticing signs they haven’t dealt with before, such as scratching noises in the walls or activity around the foundation.
In this post, you’re hearing directly from one of our Innovative Pest Solutions Technicians. Our technicians are the ones out in the field every day, inspecting homes, identifying entry points, and solving real winter pest problems for families throughout the area. They see firsthand which pests are most active during the colder months, how those pests are getting inside, and what actually works to stop them.
Rather than a generic overview, this blog shares real-world insight from someone who handles winter rodent issues day in and day out. It’s an inside look at what our technicians watch for, the common mistakes they see, and the advice they give homeowners when it comes to protecting their homes during the winter season.
Meet Dawson
Insights from Innovative Pest Solutions technicians

Dawson has been working in pest control for four years and has been part of the Innovative Pest Solutions team for three of those years. Much of his work during the winter involves responding to rodent calls, performing detailed inspections, and helping homeowners understand where pests are coming from and how to prevent them from returning.
Because he spends his days inside crawlspaces, kitchens, and attics throughout the Raleigh area, Dawson has a clear picture of what winter pest problems really look like and why they happen.
What Winter Pest Calls Look Like in Raleigh
According to Dawson, winter service calls tend to follow a familiar pattern.
“Definitely mice,” he explains. “That tends to be the most common. There are some issues here and there with the occasional roaches or things like that, but it’s mice that are the main problem.”
As outdoor temperatures drop, mice look for warm, protected spaces with access to food. Homes provide exactly that. Even well-maintained houses can become targets if small entry points exist. This is why winter is one of the busiest times of year for rodent control in the Triangle.
Homeowners often call after hearing noises at night or finding droppings in areas like kitchens, pantries, or garages. In many cases, the activity has been happening longer than they realize.

Inside a Winter Rodent Inspection
When Dawson arrives at a home for a winter rodent inspection, his first step is always a conversation with the homeowner.
“The first thing for me is talking with the customer,” Dawson says. “I want to figure out what kind of issues they’re having, where they’re hearing activity, or where they’re seeing droppings. From there, I start looking.”
Kitchens are often one of the first areas he checks. Food storage, crumbs, and hidden access points behind appliances can make kitchens a hotspot for mouse activity. From there, inspections usually move into areas homeowners rarely see, especially crawlspaces.
“I’ll look into the crawl space,” Dawson explains. “You can see droppings, cracked acorn shells, and things like that where they’re eating and taking food down there. You’ll also see marks where their feet are running across different areas.”
These signs help technicians determine how active an infestation is and how long rodents have been present. In more severe cases, tracking marks and widespread droppings point to ongoing activity that may not yet be obvious inside the living space.
This is why professional inspections are so important. Many of the most telling signs of rodent activity are found in areas homeowners don’t routinely access.
What Homeowners Can and Can’t Control
When asked what he wishes homeowners knew about preventing winter rodent problems, Dawson is quick to reassure people that it’s not always their fault.
“Honestly, a lot of times it’s got nothing to do with the homeowners,” he says. “If you live in a wooded area, it’s part of the game.”
Environmental factors like surrounding woods, colder temperatures, and seasonal rodent movement all play a role. Even clean homes can experience winter rodent activity. That said, there are still steps homeowners can take to reduce risk.
“The best thing you can do is make sure you’re cleaning up food and keeping stuff sealed,” Dawson explains. “Don’t give them a reason to come into your home. If you notice areas where they’re likely coming in, you can try to seal some of those gaps, whether it’s behind a stove or under the kitchen sink.”
Prevention is about reducing opportunity, not eliminating every possible risk. Dawson also mentions that mice only need a gap a quarter of an inch wide (the size of a pencil eraser) to get into homes. Homeowners can check for cracks or small openings and make sure they are sealed to prevent mice from getting in. Seasonal rodent pressure is a reality in our area, especially during the winter months.
Why Early Signs Matter
When asked what advice he gives homeowners who notice early signs of rodent activity, Dawson keeps it simple.
“Call a pest control professional.”
That advice comes from experience. Rodent problems rarely resolve themselves, and waiting often allows infestations to grow. Early signs like droppings, noises in the walls, or disturbed areas near the home are easiest to address before rodents become fully established.
A professional inspection can identify entry points, nesting areas, and activity levels that aren’t always visible to homeowners. Acting early often saves time, stress, and repair costs down the road.
