Will Mosquito Treatments Kill the Honeybees?

Anyone in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill triangle who has tried to raise their own bee hive knows how difficult it can be to keep them alive. The careless and overuse of pesticides is not the only villain in this, there are also mites and viruses that are taking a heavy toll. But how about mosquito treatments?

Responsible Mosquito Treatment in Raleigh NC

The Bumble Bee is also a beneficial pollinator. Some mosquito treatments are harder on bees than others. The neonicotinoids class of pesticides has become infamous for its toxicity to honeybees, but the majority of pesticides used outdoors will also kill bees, including bifenthrin products which are so popular because of their low cost. Fortunately there are some products out there that are less toxic to honeybees. We use Mavrik Perimeter (tau-fluvalinate) for our mosquito treatments because ONCE IT HAS DRIED it is non-toxic to bees. But caution is still in order because it is toxic to bees when the application has not yet dried. This is why it is important to not treat flowering plants and shrubs while they are in bloom. We also have to avoid fish pools since Mavrik Perimeter is toxic to fish, and of course vegetable and fruit gardens should not be treated either.

In addition to reducing the mosquito population, Mavrik Perimeter is also recommended for ticks, fleas, chiggers, and clover mites.
