This is a question we get from our Raleigh Pest Control customers often. Brown Recluse Spiders do exist in the North Carolina Triangle area, however, they are not very common. Unfortunately, misidentification is common because there are so many species of spiders that resemble the Brown Recluse. The Brown Recluse is a small spider ranging in size from 1/4″ to 1/2″ in length. The defining characteristics of a Brown Recluse are the violin-shaped marking on its back, and the fact that it only has six eyes (three sets of two) while most spiders have eight eyes. It’s important to remember that the Brown Recluse Spider is poisonous to humans and you will need to seek medical attention if bitten by one.
