Back-to-school season means earlier mornings, packed lunches, backpacks by the door, after-school activities, and calendars that suddenly seem much fuller. With everything happening in August, pest prevention probably isn’t at the top of your family’s to-do list.
Unfortunately, pests don’t care how busy your schedule gets.
Late summer is still an active pest season throughout Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and the surrounding Triangle. Ant colonies are well established, cockroaches thrive in the heat and humidity, mosquitoes are still active, and stinging insect colonies can be at some of their largest sizes of the year.
The good news is that you don’t need to spend an entire weekend pest-proofing your home. A few simple checks can help prevent many common late-summer pest problems.
Here’s an easy back-to-school pest checklist for busy North Carolina families.

Check Backpacks and Lunch Boxes
Backpacks and lunch boxes travel between your home, school, cars, playgrounds, and after-school activities almost every day.
While bringing home a pest from school isn’t something most families need to worry about constantly, food crumbs and forgotten snacks inside bags can attract ants and other insects once they’re back inside your home.
- Empty old snacks and food wrappers from backpacks.
- Wipe crumbs and spills from lunch boxes regularly.
- Don’t leave lunch boxes containing food sitting overnight.
- Check bags periodically for forgotten food.
A granola bar crushed at the bottom of a backpack may not seem significant, but ants are extremely good at locating even small food sources, so make sure to keep this on your pest checklist.
Clean Up the After-School Snack Zone
When kids come home hungry, the kitchen can quickly become one of the busiest rooms in the house.
It’s also one of the first places ants and cockroaches will search for food.
Odorous house ants, one of the most common ants we encounter around Triangle homes, can quickly establish trails into kitchens once workers discover a reliable food source.
- Wipe counters after snacks and meals.
- Sweep crumbs from underneath tables and cabinets.
- Store snacks in sealed containers.
- Clean up juice, soda, and other sugary spills quickly.
- Keep pet food sealed when it isn’t being used.
You don’t need a spotless kitchen to avoid pests. The goal is simply to eliminate easy food sources that encourage them to keep returning.
Take a Look Under the Kitchen Sink
While you’re in the kitchen, open the cabinet underneath the sink.
Many pests aren’t just searching for food. They’re looking for water.
A slow plumbing leak can provide ants, cockroaches, and other moisture-loving pests with exactly what they need. Because the area beneath the sink isn’t something most families inspect every day, small leaks can go unnoticed.
- Look for water around plumbing connections.
- Check for damp or warped cabinet material.
- Watch for ant or cockroach activity.
- Have persistent leaks repaired.
Bathrooms, laundry rooms, and utility areas deserve the same quick inspection on the pest checklist.
Don’t Forget the Garage
Garages become busy transition zones during the school year. Shoes, sports equipment, backpacks, outdoor toys, cardboard boxes, and other items can quickly accumulate.
Unfortunately, clutter also creates hiding places for pests.
Smoky brown cockroaches, spiders, and rodents can all take advantage of quiet, undisturbed areas.
- Reduce unnecessary cardboard and clutter.
- Store food and pet food in sealed containers.
- Check the bottom of the garage door for gaps.
- Look around corners and storage areas for droppings, webs, or other signs of activity.
Keeping items organized and off the floor when possible also makes it easier to notice pest activity early.
Check Around Your Doors and Windows
Late-summer pests are constantly moving around the exterior of your home.
Small gaps around windows, doors, utility lines, and other openings can provide easy access inside.
- Check weatherstripping around exterior doors.
- Look for damaged window screens.
- Inspect gaps around pipes and utility penetrations.
- Pay attention to insects consistently appearing around the same window or door.
If you’re repeatedly finding bugs around one particular area, there may be an entry point nearby.
Walk Around Your Foundation
You don’t need to be a pest control technician to perform a quick exterior inspection.
Take five minutes and walk around your home.
Look closely at the foundation and the first few feet of landscaping surrounding it. This is where many pest problems begin.
- Look for ant trails or active mounds.
- Check for excessive mulch against the foundation.
- Remove leaves and organic debris that have accumulated against the house.
- Look for damaged crawlspace vents.
- Trim vegetation touching the structure.
- Watch for areas where water remains after rain.
Reducing favorable conditions around the foundation can prevent pests from getting close enough to find their way indoors.
Empty Standing Water
Back-to-school season doesn’t mean mosquito season is finished in North Carolina.
August and September can still bring significant mosquito activity throughout the Triangle.
One of the easiest ways families can help reduce mosquitoes is by eliminating standing water.
- Empty water from buckets and outdoor toys.
- Check flowerpot saucers.
- Turn over wheelbarrows when they aren’t being used.
- Refresh birdbath water regularly.
- Check gutters for drainage problems.
- Look for anything around the yard that collected water after rain.
Even small amounts of standing water can provide mosquitoes with a place to reproduce.
Watch for Yellow Jackets
Late summer is especially important for stinging insect awareness.
Yellow jacket colonies grow throughout the summer and can contain large numbers of workers by August and September. Because many yellow jackets nest underground, homeowners may not realize a nest is present until it is accidentally disturbed.
Before mowing, playing outside, or doing yardwork, pay attention to insects repeatedly flying in and out of the same location.
- Watch for yellow jacket traffic near the ground.
- Check around landscaping and retaining walls.
- Look beneath deck and porch areas for wasp nests.
- Avoid disturbing an active nest.
If you find a large or difficult-to-reach nest, professional treatment is generally the safer option.
Knock Down Spider Webs
If it seems like spider webs return almost as soon as you remove them, there’s usually a reason.
Spiders build webs where they have access to food. Porch lights, windows, garages, and covered entryways often attract flying insects, making them excellent hunting locations.
- Remove webs around accessible eaves and windows.
- Check porch and garage lights for heavy insect activity.
- Look beneath patio furniture and deck railings.
- Keep landscaping trimmed away from frequently used entrances.
At Innovative Pest Solutions, de-webbing accessible areas around the exterior is an important part of our regular pest control service.
Pay Attention to What You’re Seeing
One bug doesn’t always mean you have an infestation. But repeated activity deserves attention.
If ants keep appearing in the same area, cockroaches are becoming a regular sight, or you’re suddenly finding numerous pests indoors, there is usually a reason.
Rather than repeatedly treating the insects you see, it’s important to determine where they’re coming from and what is allowing them to thrive.
Professional pest control isn’t just about spraying. Inspection is an important part of identifying those conditions before a small issue becomes a bigger one.
Put Pest Control on Autopilot and Forget the Pest Checklist
Between school, work, sports, homework, and everything else on the family calendar, remembering when it’s time to treat your home for pests is probably the last thing you want to worry about.
That’s one of the advantages of consistent preventative pest control.
At Innovative Pest Solutions, our triannual pest control service is designed to protect Triangle homes throughout the changing seasons. We regularly service the exterior of the home, inspect for developing pest problems, remove accessible spider webs, and treat areas where common household pests are likely to travel.
If something pops up between regularly scheduled visits, our plans also include free follow-up treatments when needed.
Instead of waiting for a pest problem to interrupt an already busy week, preventative service helps keep protection in place throughout the year.
One Less Thing for Your Family to Worry About
Back-to-school season is busy enough without adding ants in the pantry, roaches in the bathroom, or wasps around the backyard to your schedule.
A few simple checks around your kitchen, garage, yard, and foundation can make your home less attractive to pests. Pair those habits with consistent professional pest control, and you can stay ahead of many of the problems that become common during late summer and early fall.
Innovative Pest Solutions has been protecting families throughout Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary, Apex, Wake Forest, and the surrounding Triangle for more than 20 years.
Your schedule may be getting busier, but protecting your home doesn’t have to be.
